PALSDawn” Collection

The Idea

With Dawn, I wanted to find a repeatable motif. Something that could be incorporated into various different product with little limitation.

This pattern showed the most promise for multiple reasons. It’s unique and beautiful visual balance allowed for layering, varying vanishing points, and a beautiful flow for the eyes of the viewer.

With the motif figured out, the next step was to figure out how to apply it to products and which functional products would work best for this aesthetic decoration.

Sketching

The First

The first product I implemented the “Dawn” motif to was this piece of wall art.

There are two corresponding pieces that have a different and contrasting border.

This was the product I chose to start with to stay two dimensional and understand constructing this new idea

Understanding Construction

Figuring out construction for this piece started in CAD and moved into technical drawings with measurements for me to cut and assemble the final product.

From here, my next goal was to wrap this idea around a
3-Dimensional object.

My idea was to create a cubic shape that could function as a side table, plant stand or stool.

Going 3 Dimensional

I worked with physical prototyping techniques to identify the desired direction and refine the design before working with wood.

Production

Using the same construction methods, I worked to build this stool that maintains visual continuity from all sides and angles.

This stool perfectly applied the Dawn motif to a
3-Dimensional object and could be used across many more products within the collection.

Adding to the collection

Having the construction figured out, I began starting to add to the collection with functional repeatable projects. Starting with this coffee table design coming from my original formation of the Dawn idea.

Dawn is a collection that can be continued upon with different products, more techniques, and other unique applications. For now it consists of these 3 pieces that allowed me to understand the process of working with this design technique and understanding the potentials for repeatability.
