ACAC BLADE SIGN
Solo project | 12 weeks
Alabama Contemporary Art Center (ACAC)
The Story
This is the Alabama Contemporary Art Center, but how would you know?
“Let’s change that!”
- The people at ACAC
What they want in their sign
Present both their name and their logo
Meet the limited budget of a non-profit company
Visibility to cars and people in the day and night from both sides of the street.
Can withstand the weather of their environment
Resembles their mission to be different
Explore what exists
I found existing signs that were successful in areas such as the mounting, graphical organization, and lighting
Concept Sketching
I developed many unique ideas, and I met with the people at ACAC to deduce which direction to pursue.
“The brutalism of this one really speaks to our mission to stand out”
Develop it further
Bringing the sketch concept into SolidWorks helped bring the idea to life
45º off the building to be visible from both sides
The 3D model allowed me to understand and work with proportions, necessary components, and materials.
Installation and Maintenance
Having a mounted part and a removable cover that serves as the sign allows for easier maintenance and installation.
The red line represents an exterior weatherproof wire to provide power to the sign.
Technical Package
Developing parts list, material choice, construction methods, and production costs.
Final Results
My blade sign was chosen out of a group of 15 total designers to be manufactured and installed. It is currently in the early stages of manufacturing.
