The Story

My group and I set out to redesign a stand mixer with the intention of being inclusive to people with arthritis and other joint & mobility issues without excluding the needs of others

Project Brief: Design a houseware product that is fresh and innovative

Goals of the Project

Design an innovative stand mixer keeping Inclusivity, Functionality, and User Experience in mind.

Where to Start?

Understanding the Market

Creating a comparative product analysis and understanding the needs and parts of current stand mixers.

Understanding Arthritis

Conducting personal interviews and developing a persona for a directed design towards specific solutions.

Main Discoveries

People with arthritis tend to work better with…

-Large handles and touchpoints
-Handles and levers over buttons and dials
-Reduced precise movements
-Minimal resistance

Row of My Designs

Tweaking Combining

Using our sketches, we worked together to decide which features we would combine as well as how we needed to change/altar them to work together

What’s Next?

We moved into foamcore modeling to understand size and explore user experience on a more detailed and personal level.

Understanding the steps of use allow us to recognize potential problems in the user experience, especially for those in our target consumer.

Sequence of Use

We worked together to sketch individual concepts that all focused on different aspects of the design. This allowed us to disperse and focus our creativity.

What’s Next?

We moved into CAD to refine our ideas and add aesthetic features after designing its functional needs.

Refine

Using our CAD model we were able to clearly and visually represent the improvements that we made for our stand mixer design.

Within our CAD model, we understand the necessary parts for our construction and manufacturing.
